Kristi Noem was the former Secretary and led the Department of Homeland Security. However, she was just fired by President Donald Trump. She was previously the governor of South Dakota and is part of the Republican party. She was only appointed on January 25, of last year and was the 8th appointed secretary. She was fired due to many forms of malpractice.

Her most recent controversy was a commercial that cost $220 million. While she has claimed that Trump knew about this commercial, some sources say that he did not know. This commercial featured her on a horse and Mount Rushmore, then mentioning American history and dealing with illegal immigration. Furthermore, she’s had multiple lawsuits against her and many were for issues with immigration policies. She has previously made negative comments about the two people that were killed by ICE (Alex Preti and Nicole Good) and claimed they were terrorists. She has made multiple remarks about immigration and legality when coming into the United States, as well as other previous advertisements telling illegal immigrants to go back to their country and come back the right way.

President Trump has stated, “I wasn’t thrilled with it. I spent less money than that to become president. I didn’t know about it.” He has already found a replacement for her and it is a previous Republican Oklahoma senator, Markwayne Mullin. This order will be effective on March 31st of 2026. While Kristi Noem did get fired from being the lead in the Department of Homeland Security she was given a new role focusing on security within the Western Hemisphere. She seems to be looking forward to this new role as she wrote, “In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise I forged over the last 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” on X.
