Earthquake drills are an important way for students and staff to prepare for one. Since earthquakes are unpredictable, knowing what to do will help keep everyone safe. During an earthquake drill, students practice steps everyone should follow if a real earthquake occurs. The most common steps are drop, cover, and hold on. Students should drop to the ground, take cover under a desk, table, or door frame, and hold on until the shaking stops. Earthquake drills also help students stay calm instead of panicking when it actually happens. When people know what to expect, they’re more likely to remember what to do during an emergency. Schools may also practice evacuating the building and meeting at a safe location afterward.

Though these drills may seem repetitive, they are useful because emergencies can be confusing and stressful. Practicing ahead of time gives students and teachers the knowledge for what to do when the time comes, that way they can respond safely. Earthquake drills are a simple but important part of being prepared for natural disasters. Another important part of earthquake safety is knowing what to do after the shaking stops. Students should listen carefully to their teachers or staff and follow their instructions. It’s safest to wait and listen to instructions incase of broken glass, fallen objects, or other hazards. Teachers will check to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for before moving locations. Schools use these practice drills to practice communication and make sure that their safety plans will work out properly. These drills also teach students the procedure so they can stay calm during an emergency. Regular practice should help everyone to feel confident, prepared, and quick to react.
