AI has been a very common topic of discussion recently. It’s growing quicker than with all the generated art, scripts and even character interactions. Big internet businesses, such as "Google", "Grammarly" and "Apple" have started using and advertising AI in their products. But what are people’s thoughts on it? Do people want AI to continue? Here’s the thoughts from the students of Mayfair Middle and High School on this topic.
Question 1: How much do you know on the topic of AI?
Kayla: “I know quite a bit. I’m in the artist space a lot. So I hear a lot about generative AI specifically. I know a lot about “ChatGPT”and that kind of stuff, though I think I am still uninformed about a lot of it.”
Kingston: "I do know quite a bit about AI because, in my Esports class, we do use AI often. We just did an AI marketing assignment, so I would say I know a decent amount about it."
Roman: "I know quite a bit."
Matayo: "Not much, I just know that it's coming up and it's probably going to be a part of education and everybody's lives soon."
Destiny: "I know a lot. I've been seeing those videos of people using AI to make famous people say and do certain things that they obviously haven't done, people using AI in their school work, things like that."
Question 2: How often do you use AI, if at all?
Kayla: "I do not use AI. You will never catch me doing that."
Kingston: "I use it every now and then. I usually use it to help check on answers but, I don't use it for cheating or plagiarism or stuff like that."
Roman: "I don’t really dabble a lot with AI. Mostly, I'd rather try working out things on my own."
Matayo: "Usually for studying, if I don't know something, I just kind of use it to make a study guide for me sometimes."
Destiny: "I don't."
Question 3: What are your thoughts on the animator strikes against AI?
Kayla: "I think that they are warranted, definitely. I highly support the animator’s union. I think they should have the right and freedom to know that they're getting what they paid for and they're the ones putting passion. They should have the right to their jobs, I think that's a good way to put it."
Kingston: "To be honest, I haven't really heard about it, but if I could get more on the topic I could get a better answer."
Roman: "I think that the animator strikes against AI are very justified. AI is still pretty early in development, it's taken years to get to where it's at. While it's impressive, don’t get me wrong, I think in terms of replacing animation and creating pictures, it's still very rough around the edges. It’s definitely not to the degree that a normal animator would get to. So I don’t think that AI, in itself, could replace animation."
Matayo: "I didn’t know that there were animators strikes."
Destiny: "I think it's pretty valid that they’re going on strike cause animating it's a difficult job. So to learn that people are using AI to do something that others put so much work into and making it easy by using AI, I know it's pretty disrespectful and to understand where they’re coming from.
Question 4: How do you think AI is affecting us individually and/or socially?
Kayla: "I think, because of how widespread AI is, it's becoming normalized in our society, so we're having a little bit of an issue trying to figure out what's real. There are definite signs it's AI, but especially in the spaces where it's creating things, there's a lot of debate on whether anything is real. No one knows what's real anymore."
Kingston: "I think AI is affecting us all, mainly since the pandemic. That's when we started getting into technology and it's just been with us ever since. So I think it's affecting us on a regular basis."
Roman: "I find AI to be, to an extent, a problem in the workforce because it’s starting to replace several jobs. I mean, obviously automation has been a thing, whether it be with robots and processing. However, there's threats of AI taking over, for art specifically in the animation and entertainment business. Writing scripts as well, we saw that just a while back. I've seen things where it's trying to do math, but it doesn't do it correctly, so I feel like that's also a big threat. It's building a bridge of uncertainty for later on society because what happens when they take over a lot of jobs? I also saw a thing just recently saying AI’s main function and program is written to do things most efficiently with removing problems, so what's it going to do when it identifies humans as a potential problem or sets something back in terms of solving a problem."
Matayo: "I think it's helping and hurting individuals. I think it’s especially helping the teachers. I think a lot of people thought it was going to make it harder for teachers, but I think it's actually helping kids because now they can’t really plagiarize anymore. That's helping students because they now have to do the work."
Destiny: "It’s seeping into a lot of different aspects of our daily lives, so I think in the future it's going to become something that we’re overly dependent on with everything that we do."
Question 5: Do you think we should continue to advance AI and why?
Kayla: "I think we should continue to advance it but not in the way that we're doing it right now. I think AI has potential to actually be something good but by the way it's going now, it's stealing work from other creators to generate their images and also I just think it needs more refining. I've never used “ChatGPT” but from what I've heard from people who have used it, the responses that you get are very hit or miss in their accuracy."
Kingston: "I would say for certain things but not for everything."
Roman: "I think it would be good to look into just in terms of what it can do and how it can help us but don’t think it should be developed to an extent where it's kind of infringing upon humanity. As for other computer programs, I remember hearing back that AI’s starting to learn how to go through CAPTCHA and that's not good, it's really not good. I remember seeing a thing where it's starting to message users as well, like by itself, it's initiating the conversation, so I think only really in certain cases it should be developed more."
Matayo: "I think we don't have much of a say, it's just going to continue over time and we can't really control that."
Destiny: "No, because it's already developing a mind of its own, so if we were to advance it any further it would be way too far. Like, it's already taking over jobs that we as humans could do, so it's just going to get to a point where what's left for us when AI’s going to take over everything and be in every aspect in our lives."
Question 6: Are there any other thoughts you have on AI?
Kayla: "I think AI-its a good tool, it's just the way that people are using it is not good. The way it was made, like generatie AI, I think it could be a fine tool to use but, you shouldn't call it AI art because that's not what it is. AI will never replace art."
Kingston: "No, that's it."
Roman: "No, not really."
Matayo: "No, not really."
Destiny: "Nope."
