Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Luo

I chose to do a spotlight on the teacher I had during my sophomore year, Mrs. Luo, who teaches Mandarin I-III and AP Mandarin. She also organizes school events, including Lunar New Year Festival, the Asian Heritage Festival, and taking her classes on field trips. During lunch, she hosts club meetings for the Chinese Club in room 108. I asked her questions about her role here at Mayfair and her hobbies to get to know about her better.

Q: What was your previous job before coming to Mayfair?

A: “Before I came here, I spent a lot of time staying at home with my kids. I also taught Chinese at a Saturday school and I also had experience teaching young kids after school.”

Q: How long have you been at Mayfair for?

A:“I have been here for 11 years, so this is my 12th year. I originally came here while I was still teaching at the Saturday school, and then I got my teacher credential and began teaching here full-time.”

Q: Which memory do you cherish the most at Mayfair?

A: “There are a lot. A memory I truly cherish a lot is how my former students still keeps in contact with me. Also, taking a student to Taiwan was a major highlight.”

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of teaching?

A: “My favorite things to do outside of teaching is watching movies and reading. I like novels; I really love a good story.”

Q: What are your goals for this year for the students?

A: “My goal this year is for the students to speak the language more confidently.”

Q:  What do you enjoy the most about teaching Mandarin?

A: “Hearing the kids using the language always brightens my day.”

Q: What is a personal goal for yourself? 

A: “My personal goal is to simply be a better teacher than yesterday.”

Q: Finally, what is the fun part of picking out the Chinese names for the students?

A: “I think students enjoy finding their identities, and the names carry actual actual meaning. It is also like giving them small gifts, and there is always something deeply positive in those names.”
