After three decades of school spirit and dedication, on Oct. 29th, 2026, security guard Ms. Virginia has retired from Mayfair High School. To learn more about her, I sat down and interviewed her to reflect on her time here.

Q: Can you tell us about your journey here at Mayfair and the different roles you’ve held over the years?

A: Sure! So I started in 1988; I was an Instructional assistant. I did that for 5 years with the special ed kids. Then, I moved into the girls' locker room in 1994. I handled the girls' locker room and custodial. In 2001, I became campus security. In total, I have been at Mayfair High for 30 years.”

Q: Looking back, what stands out as your favorite memory?

A: All of the amazing kids, the spirit on our campus, the activities, the joy I’ve experienced, just kids in general.

Q: What are some of your plans after retiring?

A: A new adventure, reading, gardening, boating, camping, going on a cruise; I’ve never been on a cruise, so it is time for me now. I want to travel, to see different things that I haven’t seen before. I’ve been here for so long that I haven’t really traveled much.

Q: Where would you like to travel once you retire?

A: I’d like to travel in an RV through the different states. I’d like to see Montana, Tennessee, Colorado, and just see all the different states. I haven’t visited many states, so I would love to see everything they have to offer.

Q: After being so involved on campus, who and what are you going to miss the most?

A: You guys! I’m going to miss you guys. You know, just saying hi to you every morning, or good morning, and have a good day and be safe and keep you guys safe, all that stuff. I’m going to miss all of it.

Ms. Virginia’s retirement marks the end of an era, but her impact on Mayfair will be felt for years to come. We all remember her as a remarkably kind, gentle, and understanding person who always put the well-being of students first. Thank you, Ms. Virginia, for making Mayfair a safer, brighter place. We will all miss you deeply, and we wish you all the best with your retirement!
