SkillsUSA  is an organization dedicated to training students in order to prepare them for the workforce. Every year, competitions are held in order to show off the most capable students, and Mayfair has once again been given the opportunity to compete in the SkillsUSA State Leadership Skills Conference in Ontario from April 10-13 after dozens of competitors successfully made it past the regional stage of the competition the previous winter.

The event began with the opening ceremony, a two-hour long event held within the Ontario Convention Center to welcome attendees. Over 4,000 competitors and advisors from across the state filled the seats of the venue, as speeches were given and awards were presented, stoking the flames of competition within each individual. It was during this ceremony that Mrs. Adriatico was awarded the Advisor of the Year Award for Region 3. Once formalities had concluded, some teams immediately got to work on their events as prompts were given soon after the ceremony ended.

Friday and Saturday were crunch time. These two days were jam packed as various events had started the Thursday before. There was little time to relax as competitions such as Teamworks toiled away for nine hours as they built their tiny home, while hybrid contests such as Video News Production spent the days filming and editing their news broadcast. All the work put in by these students ended up paying of as well, as there were Monsoons that placed high enough to advance to the national competition in June

While the competitions were tough and time was of the essence, this was a great experience for our monsoons. The various social events led to some memorable moments, and even the mealtimes in between competitions gave competitors opportunities to reinforce relationships. Hopefully Mayfair will once again return to compete on the state stage.
