An issue that once left many communities in Peru without safe water has shown progress decreasing rather than increasing. The government focused the programs on cities such as Lima and Puno to reduce pollution in the water and protect water sources. Government initiatives, private investments, and support from all over the world has helped Peru expand clean water access to many small communities and known cities. After such a long time they finally decided to make an effort to address sanitation issues throughout large cities. Though they made more improvement through international cooperation, they still had to get the smaller areas to help bring down the risk. They encourage public-private partnerships and promote the public protecting the ecosystems they have. Recently, The World Bank has approved a $200 million 10 year program to help strengthen waste management in Peru's water sector. Most programs are aimed toward tourists or any foreigners to help spread awareness about pollution and climate change.
The government accepted access to financing large projects, like the waste water treatment and water distribution networks. Those investments are expected to benefit millions of Peruvians by increasing their coverage and reliability. Foreign and domestic investments have brought so much to their private finances. Due to Peru having a very diverse geography, they launched a National Adaptation Plan, which guides climate change adaptation. The NAP crosses many sectors and brings a benefit for the Peruvians. NAP is to reduce any long term water loss, such as droughts and floods.
But to be fair, Peru’s improvement is impressive, yet considering how long it took Peruvians to finally take action for clean water is a bit concerning. As Peru improves, their economic growth and support will improve too.
