In the streets of New York, nurses are on strike for more staffing and higher pay in their field. Around 15,000 nurses from five of the vital run hospitals left their jobs, making this the largest nurse strike in New York’s history, passing up the big nurse strike since 2023 with a total of 7,000 nurses protesting. The hospitals impacted by the strike are Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West and NewYork-Presbyterian in Manhattan, and Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx.

As the nurses are chanting and honking, the strike resumes for its second day on January 13, 2026 in front of Mount Sinai. With the strike taking place during a severe flu season, this could mean hospitals have to transfer patients, and possibly redirect ambulances. For each hospital, the nurses' demands are different but the top issue for all the hospitals are staffing levels. Nurses are also wanting better security measures in their work space as a result of an incident that happened last week which was a man who closed himself up in a Brooklyn hospital with a sharp object. The union has been wanting to put a limit on the hospital's use of artificial intelligence. Some hospitals are saying that they have been improving staffing in recent years and the things that the unions are demanding are using up a large load of the money that they have.

About 66% of New York nurses reported that their hospitals are not staffed suitably in order to give safe care to their patients. Approximately 250 nurses began to chant “Monte, Monte you can’t hide, we can see your greedy side.” about the streets. This is now the strike’s 4th day of occurrence.
