New Controversial PS5 Pro Announcement

There were many events that happened this year that were unexpected; Sony releasing a new console was definitely one of those things. The term “new” however, is kind of a stretch, as it’s just an upgrade to their existing console (and even that might be a stretch!).

On September 10th, Sony announced their new PS5 Pro during a Playstation Technical Presentation, promoting it as a massive upgrade to the now almost four-year-old PS5, and on paper, that might be true. Compared to the PS5, the PS5 Pro boasts decent upgrades befitting of a new console. According to IGN, the most upgraded aspects of the console will be the GPU and storage, boasting a 67% faster GPU and a two terabyte SSD compared to the base PS5’s 825 gigabyte, while also including better ray tracing capabilities and AI upscaling. Essentially, the PS5 Pro is built to make games look engaging, which many games will definitely be excited about. However, many including myself believe that this does not justify the increased price tag.

While the PS5 Pro is being marketed as an upgrade to the standard PS5, it does have its drawbacks. For starters, the insane price range. The PS5 Pro is already out for pre-order, and apparently Sony believes that the new upgrades are worthy of a $700 price tag, which many feel like it's huge and unjustified jump in price. On top of the increased price, the PS5 Pro will not include a disk tray, so people will have to spend more money to be able to play physical copies of their games. The announcement of the PS5 Pro is in the same vein as Apple announcing a new phone every year, with just some minor tweaks (mainly to the camera) and an asinine price.

The console will release on November 7th of 2024 and only time will tell just how good this console truly is and if it’s somehow worthy of its price tag.
