Mayor Mamdani’s Appearance at the 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony

On September 11th, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the 25th Annual 9/11 Remembrance ceremony at Ground Zero. Many took this as an offense, as the terrorists who attacked the Twin Towers also identified as Muslim; Jewish News reports that some asserted it as a “slap in the face to survivors and those affected.” Before Mamdani's appearance at the memorial, former New York City leader Rudy Giuliani even said: “It offends me.” Various supporters of Mayor Mamdani are calling the backlash “prejudice” and “racism.” Supporters believe that Mamdani’s opponents don't want him to attend the 9/11 ceremony due to his religion. 

During the ceremony, a camera caught Mamdani and politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez conversing and smiling. This moment went viral all over social media because both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez seemed to be laughing at the victims; critics of Mamdani are calling this disrespectful due to the somber nature of the event. Others are saying it was a simple exchange of politeness. Soon after the moment went viral, Michelle Ragusa, who claims she was standing by the two, posted on X, “The camera just caught her greeting him hello. Multiple other politicians were laughing and joking behind me. Republicans and Democrats.” 

Even Vice President JD Vance faced controversy for shaking Mayor Mamdani’s hand at the memorial. According to The Independent, Laura Loomer stated JD Vance would ‘regret’ shaking Mamdani's hand; she posted a statement on X that quotes, “It will be a photo you live to regret forever if you shake his hand at the 9/11 memorial”(@LauraLoomer). However, Laura tweeted this before the event had taken place. People were already frustrated that Mamdani would be attending the event, yet Mamdani refused to back down. A few days before, he designated September 11th as the city’s first official “Day of Remembrance and Service”. At the memorial, Mayor Mamdani spoke about how 9/11 affected the air quality, causing many NY citizens to have lung cancer and other difficulties such as asthma, and he talked about how the tragedy had affected him growing up in New York as a Muslim.

Due to the events of 9/11, each New York mayor has been compelled to attend the memorial service. Zohran Mamdani, as a New York mayor, was no exception; it was his duty to attend a 9/11 memorial as well. Even despite the backlash Mamdani received, he was proud to attend.
