Mayfair Blown Away By “Hamilton” At the Pantages Theater

Updated: Oct 7, 2024

September 26, 2024 was surely a memorable date for 75 of Mayfair’s Monsoons. Mayfair was chosen to participate in the Gilder-Lehrman Hamilton Education Program alongside several schools across California. This program gave our juniors and seniors, including myself, an opportunity to attend a viewing of “Hamilton” at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood in exchange for writing a creative performance piece that is meant to simulate the process that Lin-Manuel Miranda used in order to write the many amazing tracks included in the musical. This program also came with an unexpected twist: Mayfair drove up to Hollywood in charter buses, which were definitely a nice change of pace from the standard school bus.

While excitement for the musical was certainly high, there were a few concerns prior to the musical starting. For starters, the vast amount of students that wrapped around the theater caused many to believe that they would be waiting outside for a long time. However, the biggest concern was with the songs that were scheduled to be played throughout the musical. The playbill that the students received, which contained information about the schedule of the play and the list of songs that would be played, had many fan-favorite songs such as “Aaron Burr, Sir” and “Guns and Ships” omitted from the list, causing many to fear that they had come all that way just not hear their favorite tracks. This, however, ended up being false and all of the songs from the original musical were performed.

The performance that these students experienced was nothing short of surreal. While some had doubts about the cast, they expertly delivered every line and every note for every song, while also adding their own flair to these well-established tracks. Many students, myself included, are still struggling to grasp that we were present to watch “Hamilton”, as it was the experience of a lifetime that words simply cannot express. To quote one of the songs from the musical, the performance has “blew us all away.”
