Beloved P.E. teacher and girls’ flag football coach Ms. Rienstra is hanging up her whistle and heading into retirement at the end of the 2024–2025 school year. Ms. Rienstra has been with the district for about 40 years and here at Mayfair for 20. With her time on campus, Ms. Rienstra’s favorite memories were when she and Ms. Bos would dress up on spirit days, especially during the years we weren’t on a block schedule because they got to see all their students the same day. Because not only did they dress up in fun costumes, but they would also put on little shows by dancing or coming out to music. She notes that she will miss the kids and the people she works with, especially Ms. Bos. The legacy Ms. Rienstra hopes to leave behind is flag football here at Mayfair and to get more girls involved in the sport.

Her favorite activity to do in her P.E. class was dodgeball — she loved watching how into the game her students would be. While being the flag football coach, she recalls that coaching has taught her patience and adapting to new coaching styles each season. She is really proud of Courtney Cummings receiving the first flag football scholarship at our school and hopes that there will be more girls who receive this scholarship in the future.

During retirement she plans on golfing, playing pickleball, floating in her pool, and going on vacations. After six months of her retirement, she hopes to be back here subbing classes. She is most looking forward to sleeping in and jokingly says she no longer has to live by bells anymore.

I’m pretty sure everyone’s going to miss Ms. Rienstra’s sharp sense of humor and of course her and Ms. Bos’ P.E. shenanigans. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. I’m genuinely so grateful I got to be in her P.E. classes back in middle school; she truly made it my favorite class. Wish you nothing but the best during your next chapter of retirement — you’ve more than earned it!
