As part of the Superbowl festivities, the NFL has invited five-time Grammy-winning band Green Day. The ceremony itself will have various NFL MVPs along with the band. In fact Billie Joe Armstrong quoted, “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!"

With this addition though, many people are not happy with Green Day’s addition to the lineup with people on instagram saying things such as “Another loud mouthed liberal band with ZERO talent” and “Two acts that hate America”. Then on the other side, its users saying stuff like “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” quoting the lyric change in the band's song American Idiot that says “I’m not a part of your redneck agenda”. Then another person said, “Still not showing the bay area legends Metallica no respect. Disappointing NFL”. About that quote, I agree that it is disappointing because I love metal, but the NFL said that they won't invite Metallica for halftime because they are “too heavy for halftime”.

Now with all of these comments, I just want to share what the definition of punk is. It is “a rebellious subculture and music genre, starting in the 1970s, defined by anti-establishment attitudes, raw/fast music, and shock tactics in fashion (spikes, bright hair)”. This shows that punk is naturally rebellious and just overall anti-establishment, so for people hating Green Day for being political that's the whole point. I know I didn't quote that, but if you are anti-establishment you don't exactly hate America. It just means you oppose dominant powers in society, so it's more of Green Day being against higher ups than being against the country as a whole.

To end this off, I am so excited for the superbowl and all the performers that will be participating in it on February 8th at Levi Stadium at Santa Clara, California.
