Over Mother's Day weekend, an act of graffiti was preformed on the side of school property. The graffiti was located near the north side of campus, near the northern public parking.
This brings up the important topic of graffiti done on Mayfair High School’s campus. Graffiti is an act of property vandalism, and if caught, it can result in a serious punishment for the offender. Graffiti has become more and more common at Mayfair and it's important for those to know that when damaging school property, you are disrespecting the money that the BUSD district spends on improving the property at school.
Not to mention, all of the graffiti done on campus is just ugly and unsightly. At Mayfair, graffiti is mostly done in the bathrooms. Those who go to Mayfair know how unruly and prolific the bathroom graffiti can be.
Off-campus, graffiti is practiced as an art form, a way to express yourself visually. Sometimes it is used to promote political movements as a way to make a statement. Graffiti originated and grew in popularity in the 1970s in New York, usually performed by young adults.
Although vandalism is mostly illegal (especially on private property), there are some forms of legal graffiti. If you feel the need to express yourself creatively, there are public places where graffiti can be legal and totally okay to perform. It is important to receive consent or permission from the area in which you plan to perform an act of graffiti. You should also keep in mind to be respectful; remember, if being placed in a public space, everyone is subjected to your art, and if it can be seen in any disrespectful light, some people can become offended. Be safe, Monsoons, and remember, please do not disrespect or deface school property with graffiti. Image courtesy of Olivia Jennings.
