Chipotle’s Ouija Board Ad Sparks Debate Over Halloween Marketing

Chipotle Mexican Grill is a fast-food chain known for its burritos, bowls, and tacos. Recently, however, a company advertisement has drawn significant attention. The fast-food chain released a Halloween ad featuring a Ouija board-style design with a tortilla chip being used as a pointer to spell out “margarita.” While some people found the ad funny and creative, others have criticized it.
According to a Chipotle company announcement, the campaign is called “Summon the Spirits Tour.” It was created to promote the return of the company’s margaritas for a limited time in October. The commercial also includes Halloween decorations and other spooky-themed items.
However, not everyone liked the advertisement. In an Oct. 19 report, ChurchLeaders noted that some Christians expressed concern over the Ouija board and crystal ball imagery. Some critics said that they would stop eating at Chipotle because of the promotion. These reactions show how an advertisement meant to promote a product can turn into a much bigger issue. On the other hand, others viewed the ad as typical Halloween marketing. Halloween is associated with spooky decorations, scary movies, and supernatural themes, and the advertisement included exactly that. As a result, many did not see the advertisement as problematic.
The controversy also raises a question about how much companies should consider customers’ beliefs when advertising a product. Businesses want to stand out with their advertisements, but something that one person finds funny might make someone else uncomfortable.
In the end, Chipotle’s Ouija board ad shows how even fast-food advertisements can trigger online discussion. Whether viewed as Halloween fun or inappropriate symbolism, the campaign reveals how advertising impacts audiences differently and reveals the importance of their reactions. Chipotle has not released a statement regarding the criticism.
