America: The Land of Free Election

This year’s election will definitely go down in history as the first of many and lots on the line. Donald Trump was able to win over the U.S with 295 electoral votes, and counting, and will take over as president in January. Many people were expecting a very tight and close race, but it appeared that Donald Trump was definitely the highly favored president.

This will be the last election where I won’t be eligible to vote, so this year I went with my mom when she voted so I can see what to expect when I’m able to vote in the future election. I noticed that when she was voting for president that there was another option that allowed you to write in another candidate that was not on the ballot. When I asked my mom why that was there, she said it was because if someone didn’t want to vote for the people who are running, they can have the opportunity to vote for another candidate. This just proves how lucky us U.S. citizens are because we have the opportunity to vote for who we want to run our country. Unfortunately, other countries do not get the same kind of democracy we get, they are forced into a government and laws that they don’t agree with, and are unable to do anything about it. Unlike them, us Americans can vote for the way we want our country to be run.

Even though the candidate you wanted to win, or even voted for didn’t win, you should still be grateful that you had the opportunity to let your opinion be valued. It’s very important that we all vote when eligible, so we can make a difference. We should still respect the other candidate because at the end of the day, their goal is to make our country a better place for everyone to live in.
