Winter Olympics Recap

The 2022 Winter Olympics was held in Bejing, China. Norway captured the most wins, walking away with 37 medals total. The United States took 5th place with a total of 25 medals.

Alpine skiing:

Alpine skiing, sometimes referred to as downhill skiing, takes place sliding down snow-covered slopes. Switzerland sets the record with 5 gold medals. In the men’s downhill, Beat Fuez won while Corinne Suter took the victory in women’s. In women’s combined, Michelle Gisin won. Marco Odormatt won in the men’s giant slalom. Lastly, Lara Gut-Behrami won first place in women’s super-G.

Biathlon:

Biathlon is a sport that is rooted in the skiing traditions of Scandinavia, which combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting. Justine Braisaz-Bouchet of France won the final gold medal of the women's 2022 Olympics biathlon program. She crossed the finish line of the 12.5km mass start at 40:18:0.

Cross Country Skiing:

Cross Country Skiing is a form of skiing where skiers rely on their locomotion to move across snow-covered terrain. The gold medalist is Livo Niskanen. Jessie Diggins is the U.S skiing star who won bronze in the women's sprint free on Feb. 8 to secure her first individual Olympic medal and the United States’ first-ever women’s individual cross-country medal.

Curling:

In curling, players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard.

Figure skating:

Olympic figure skating is when individuals, pairs, or groups perform a routine segment on ice in figure skates. It was also the first winter sport to be included in the Olympic Games. The gold medal victor was awarded to Nathan Chen for the United States this year.

Ice Hockey:

Finland won the Olympic gold in men’s ice hockey this year, against Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) with a score of 2-1. Canada won the gold medal in ice hockey women while the United States came in 2nd place in women’s ice hockey, earning a silver medal.

Ski jumping:

Ski jumping features five events, including the new mixed team event. In competition, jumps are evaluated by the distance traveled and the style of the jump. The distance is measured along the curve of the landing hill from the takeoff point to the spot where the jumper lands.

Snowboard:

Su Yiming, an 18-year-old from China, won the gold medal in snowboarding, along with Anna Gasser of Austria, who won gold in snowboarding big air. However, the United States took the victory in snowboarding with a gold medal.

Speed skating:

Bart Swings raced to victory in the speed skating men's mass start, winning the first gold medal from a Belgian athlete at Beijing 2022 and their second medal in total at the Games. The last time a Belgian athlete won a gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games was in 1948 when Micheline Lannoy and Pierre Baugniet took victory in the pairs figure skating event.
