Trump’s Plan to Build a Triumphal Arch
On September 20, 2026, President Donald Trump made a post on his Truth social media platform that involved his plans to add a Triumphal Arch to the Washington D.C area. The proposed arch will be located on the Potomac and will be approximately 250-feet tall. President Donald Trump has said that he wants to build this triumphal arch specifically to store a large number of drones, snipers, a large quantity of sniper ammunition. Many veterans and historians don’t approve of this project, and have even taken this case into legal matter, but Trump is still set to continue with his plans.
The construction of this site has three main reasons that it was set into action by the president's administration. First of all, the President has said that he wants to build this arch to honor the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Secondly, he wants to fill an architectural gap, according to NBC News, President Donald Trump stated that, “Washington D.C. is the only city in the world that's of great importance that doesn’t have a triumphal arch." The third reason he says that he wants to build this arch is because of the military and national security complex. In September 2026, the administration updated the proposal, stating the military requested that the arch would double as a tactical security outpost because the Triumphal arch houses drones, snipers located on the roof, and a large amount of ammunition storage.
This proposed project has gotten a lot of negative attention from many different public groups. The many people that are against this include lawmakers, critics, and veteran groups. These groups say that this is nothing more than just a personal vanity project, or a monument to Trump himself. Preservationists and the National Park Service are also against this new project because of the disruption it will do to historic landmarks, continuously expressing concerns that this construction is going to obstruct the views of Arlington House and Lincoln memorial. In addition, analysts argue that the installation of the arch will bring lawsuits in the near future by veterans, civic groups, and environmental groups. Even flight attendants have been publicly against President Donald Trump’s new triumphal arch idea. According to PBS News, “DCA is already stretched to its limit, we do not need an obstacle taking up space in our flight path," said Nelson. "Nor should commercial aviation have to dodge military drones, missiles or snipers while attempting to take off or land at Washington National Airport. Safety first always." It's evident that this new Triumphal arch project is having many obstacles due to public opposition.
To conclude, this new triumphal arch project made by the president Donald Trump is seen as a negative impact to Washington D.C. We can tell that many people disapprove of the construction of this site: historians, veterans, lawmakers, airport staff, civic groups, analysts, National service park employees, and many more. Due to all of this disapproval discussed among these people, there is a chance the project will take longer to be constructed. Overall, this project does not have a very high chance of being approved due to all of these opposition encounters despite the design already being approved by the commissioners.
