On May 17, 2025, there was a tall Mexican Navy ship that was called, Cuauhtémoc, and it crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge while it was being departed to New York City. This event had resulted in two deaths and a multiple number of injuries. This accident happened at around 8:30 P.M. Eastern time. What caused this to happen is that the vessel had lost power and it was then carried by currents to go onto the bridge. Which then ultimately caused the three masts to snap once there was an impact.

This accident did cause two deaths. One person was named América Sanchez who was 20 years old and from Veracruz. The other person was named Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, who was 23 years old and from Oaxaca. Both individuals were a part of the 277 crew members that were on the boat at the time. There were also a little above 20 crew members who had been sustained due to injury, and three of them were being told they were in critical condition.

Emergency help like the NYPD Harbor Unit and the U.S. The Coast Guard had taken action very quickly. They started off by evacuating the injured individuals into hospitals.  Although the Bridge was run into, the bridge itself had no substantial damage done to it, and was reopened shortly after an inspection was being conducted.

This event is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, being focused on the fact that the ship lost its power as well as there being a boat aside from this one that had helped the vessel before the crash.  The Mexican Navy is willing to cooperate so that they can have a full sense of transparency during this investigation.
