The basketball game is an annually played sports event made in honor of Hiram “Chick” Peterson, who was one of Mayfair’s assistant principals who sadly passed away back in 2002. The student team is made up of two players from each sport, and the faculty members volunteer for their spot. Before the game starts, the teachers come out in groups of 3-8, each having a short performance as their introduction. One of the many memorable performances was a money spray where they threw actual money into the opposing team, who all scrambled to get a bill or two. Another memorable performance was done by Mr. Bacani, Mrs. McIntosh, and Mrs. Ozier where they did an entertaining breakdance segment complete with a dabbling of gymnastics. The student team had a promising streak, keeping the faculty on their toes up until they entered the fourth quarter. To their luck, the staff got a bit more strategic with their game plan and managed to maintain their winning title for another year. Though, a few of their plays may have come off as overdone. Some students were pulled to the ground in a little tug of war moment, resulting in a broken nail and a teacher or two who fell on the court, but everyone is fine with no hard feelings. Mr. Guerra the G.O.A.T. unfortunately did not live up to the hype he was boasting about as he paraded around campus seeing as he barely made any shots, if not none at all. It was an exciting game and I hope that there’s an even bigger crowd next year to honor the memory of our beloved assistant principal. It truly is a beautiful way to bring the staff and student community together in likeness to have fun with friends and family.
