The Rise and Fall of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In San Diego at Comic Con 2007, it was announced that “Iron Man” would be released in theaters on May 2nd in 2008. The success of Marvel before Iron Man was going in a downhill spiral. Their most popular characters were only allowed to be shown in movies made by Sony, the 2000’s X men and Spider-man (in the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield era) had been sold to Sony to keep Marvel in business.
Marvel Studios was only allowed to use the less popular characters from the Avengers such as Iron man. Iron Man was risky to produce because lead actor Robert Downey Jr. had well documented addiction problems, however, director Jon Favreau was able to turn the risky casting and the less popular characters into a blockbuster hit. As successful as Iron man was, the true stroke of genius came with the cameo of Nick Fury saying, “I’m here to talk to you about the Avengers initiative”
That single quote opened the door for Marvel Studios to produce their successful trilogy’s for Iron man, Thor, and Captain America. These incredible successes led to seeing the very first live action team up of the MCU's greatest characters in Marvel's ‘The Avengers’. After the success of ‘The Avengers’, the MCU went on a mostly successful run releasing 16 movies over the span of 7 years. In 2019, the MCU concluded what is now known as the infinity saga with the release of ‘Avengers Endgame’. To this day ‘Avengers Endgame’ remains the second highest grossing film of all time with a box office total of 2.8 billion dollars.
It was then after this that Marvel struggled to find its footing. The transition to streaming shows, actors aging out of their roles, and then the COVID shut down led to superhero movie burnout. With the success of the MCU, Marvel was able to make deals and bring back characters they had previously sold to Sony such as Spider-man, with Tom Holland now playing the role. Although Marvel has seen significant decline after ‘Avengers Endgame’, they seem to be ready for a comeback with ‘Avengers Doomsday’ coming out on December 18th in 2026.
