New School Year, New Schedule (Again?)

It’s once again time for the new school year, and while things like the questionable school lunch have remained the same since last year, other things got their summer glow up, or would it be considered a glow down? That’s the conversation that has arisen over the new school year’s bell schedule, something that plenty of students didn’t expect as we had just experienced a massive change in last year’s schedule with the transition to block schedule.

During the 2023-2024 school year, Mayfair decided to switch things up in terms of the schedule. Rather than sticking with the 58 minutes of class time and having six to seven periods a day. The school decided to switch to a block schedule with students having an “anchor day” on Monday, where students would have all of their class periods for about 30 minutes. Furthermore, students had a minimum of three to four classes through Tuesday-Friday that were each an hour and a half, with odd classes (1, 3, 5, 7) on Tuesday/Thursday and even classes (2, 4, 6, 8) on Wednesday/Friday. This change was done in order to reduce the workload of students from prior years. Additionally, the new switch would ease the stress of student athletes having to balance both their academics and their sports schedules. However, this would result in the loss of 37 hours of total teaching time, which affected classes such as AP classes and other courses that were content-heavy.

This year, the schedule remains relatively the same, with the only difference being the removal of anchor days in favor of a rotating block schedule (Ex. If one week has three odd days on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the following week will have two odd days on Tuesday and Thursday). While the reasoning and effects behind this switch are still unknown, students already have a few opinions about it. For starters, many students have said that this new alternating schedule is somewhat confusing as it’s hard to remember which classes are on which days and preferred last year’s schedule because of that. However, while students are more or less in agreement on how confusing the new schedule is, there are quite a few differing opinions in regards to anchor days from last year; as some students loved that classes were so short, while others saw the 30 minute classes useless and barely anything done.

While students have already begun forming their opinions about the new schedule, the school year has only just begun. Only time will tell just how much better (or worse) this change made Mayfair’s schedule.
