Mayfair High School hosted an assembly that filled the gym with excitement for the homecoming courts, performances, and a Las Vegas inspired skit, which wasn’t predictable in my opinion.

As students entered the gym to watch the assembly, Color Guard and band were simultaneously performing. To open the assembly, the Mayfair Marching Corps played the National Anthem. Mrs. McAndrew gave the microphone to Mr. Saunders to introduce the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Homecoming princesses and princes. Each nominee had their own introduction and dance with their partner.

The Marching Corps continued the celebration with a performance of “La Chona,” and Color Guard joined in with their routine as they finished. Mrs. McAndrew also spoke about the true meaning of homecoming at Mayfair, which she says, “you can always come home to Mayfair.” She also spoke about how this would be the last homecoming game at the Ron Yary Stadium, as it is now expected to be held at the new stadium here at Mayfair next school year. Personally, I will have graduated by then, but I will still try my best to go and see it!

The assembly continued on with the cheer team performing “Fight Song.” The Senior Homecoming court then followed with a dance to the song, “Feeling Good.” The boys started off dancing alone, then, the girls slowly joined the boys for the main performance. As the lights started to dim, the senior court did their final steps, bowed, and then returned to their seats as the Mayfair Dance team took the floor. After their dance routine, Mariners and Showtime then performed the song, “Poker Face.” To end their routine, they threw their cards in the air and returned to their seats. The Las Vegas theme continued as ASB came out representing the infamous Circus Circus, Flamingo, and the Luxor hotels.

The assembly transitioned into a Las Vegas skit, which had Mr. Irving, Mrs. McAndrew, Ms. Kjorness, and Dr. Morgan. They started by acting out a gambling scene, with Dr. Morgan playing as the dealer. Robbers then entered and stole the crowns for the Senior homecoming king and queen. Breezy and Stormy, the two Monsoon mascots, appeared and started to dance as a part of the skit by helping search for the stolen crowns. The robbers from the skit visited each hotel cut out stand, took pictures of it, and danced with the mascots. A student Elvis Presley made an appearance and danced with other characters, one notable character being Spider-Man. It ended with everyone being swept away by a Monsoon storm, which was unexpected from my perspective.

As the assembly started to come to an end, Mrs. McAndrew announced that at the upcoming football game at the Ron Yary Stadium in Bellflower is where the homecoming queen would be announced, followed by the homecoming king at the actual dance. The assembly ended with the playing of the Mayfair Alma Matter. This brought students on the floor close together in the middle, as the lights started to dim all around the gym, a final goodbye to the assembly.
