The next upcoming musical for Mayfair High School is Mean Girls. Last year, students and families voted for what musical they wanted to see the Monsoon Theater perform, and they listened. Mean Girls was the chosen candidate for the Mayfair’s theater program of 2025. Follow Cady Heron on her journey through highschool as she tries to make it through the stereotypical social politics the students follow. Watch as she tries to fit into an infamous group of girls called “The Plastics” and the hijinx that ensues. Drama’s abundant! Chaos galore! Full of songs, dance and comedic characters, this play has it all!
Tryouts just happened with just over 40 participants, hoping to get a part in this amazing school event! I’ve personally been in the musicals since after the pandemic, and I haven’t seen this many people audition before! (Ask Mr. Saunders how high the numbers of auditions were compared to past plays.)
Here are some things Mr. Saunders, the theater teacher at Mayfair and director of this play, has to say about this upcoming performance:
Q: What are your plans for the play?
A: “My plans for the musical is to cast everybody that's auditioned, to give them a part and let them have their... journey begin on that stage. My plan is to give them the best performance and atmosphere so that they can shine their light and grow. (But my plan is) also that the audience comes in and is just taken away. Like, Pantages quality performances in a school cafeteria. That's my plan, that's always my plan: For everyone to have the best time they can.”
Q: What do you expect from the actors?
A: “Professionalism, happiness, joy and an experience that-an open mind to an experience of growth, where they are and where they end and just being like ‘Oh my god the memories we made and the family we've made."
Q: Is there anything you want people to know about the play or just in general?
A: "I think Mean Girls is a timely play and I really worked hard to pick the right script for this because sometimes the musical allows you to see the inside of the person. What made the movie so charming was that you were just watching people develop and choose what side of the line they want to be on, right? And it was done in a comical way so that we can laugh at ourselves. The musical is a little bit gritty, but this particular treatment of the script gets more back to the fun of the movie. But yet it reminds us all that there's nothing wrong with being who you are and when you are who you are, you shine. I think some of the biggest enemies of women are not men but other women. And I think this also taps into that as well. Y'know, when you talk about feminism movement and everything else, I think women destroy women faster than any guy ever could. So this also has a fun way of saying ‘Yeah, be yourself, be who you are, be friends, and support one another.”
Here are the thoughts of some of the people auditioning for the play:
From Violet (new)
- “My thoughts is that yesterday or the day before for first auditions, I am not good at singing, so that kind of made me nervous so I feel like I did not do good. But today in auditions we’re doing choreography and acting and those are my better forte so I'm feeling confident. I just hope I get a role here, whether it be Janice, which I'm going for, or just something small like the principal.”
From Chris (returning)
- “Genuinely, on the rehearsals? I think rehearsals are fine, I think they could just-well not be a little longer just be like-just better in general. Cause sometimes I feel like there's a lot of things but it's fine.”
From Adanze (new)
- “I just hope it's fun, I guess because it's a very fun and out there musical. I hope we can get the huge ensemble so it's fun and I hope I’m part of it I guess!”
