Mother’s Day, a day of telling your mother how much she means to you. A day to celebrate how much she’s done for you throughout your life. Mother’s Day just happened to land on May 11th this year. I hope everyone and their mother’s used the day to its full extent.

Mother’s Day’s origin is an interesting one. Its origins were started in 1872 by anti-war activists. At the time, the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War had just occurred, the activists wanted to promote worldly peace and unity. On the day itself, women would gather in social areas, especially churches and halls to spread and promote the idea of peace. Then, in 1904, a former football coach by the name of Frank Hering made the suggestion to use the day to celebrate not peace, but mothers themselves. This led to 1908, where the modern spirit behind the holiday originated. Anna Jarvis, in honor of her late mother, set the precedent that the holiday is spent celebrating your own mother and all she has done for you. The holiday was officially made a national holiday in 1914 by president Woodrow Wilson, and now it falls on the second Sunday of May.

Since it is a holiday, there are many activities and gifts that people do to celebrate it, mostly in the form of gift giving. In order to show appreciation towards our mothers, sometimes we give them gifts such as flowers, cards, chocolates, coffee mugs, and books. Other times we may take them out for some activity, such as a picnic, dinner, or movie. Other common things people do for their mothers include housework, such as cleaning and making her breakfast in bed.

I hope everyone reading this treated their mothers well that day. Make sure to give her a call and tell her how much you love and appreciate her. Happy Mother’s Day!
