Character.AI Bankruptcy
If you’ve ever used Character.AI to talk to fictional characters, pass time, or even have an online husband or wife, you might have seen the news about the popular platform filing for bankruptcy. The news has left many users wondering what will happen to their chats moving forward and whether the app will disappear completely.
On October 12, it had been announced that the owners had started a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. In summary, this allows a company to go through a court-supervised process to sell its business or assets and work through its financial and legal problems. However, bankruptcy does not automatically mean the app is shutting down. One of the biggest reasons behind the situation is the company’s growing legal troubles. Character.AI has faced lawsuits and investigations over concerns about how its chatbots interact with younger users. Some families have claimed that chatbot conversations led to serious harm to their younger children, while state officials have raised concerns about user safety and privacy.
The company has said it has taken the necessary steps to improve safety on its platform. Besides the safety issues, money has also been a major problem for the company. Running AI chatbots requires expensive power, and Character.AI has reportedly lost around $8-9 million every month. Even with millions of people using this app, those costs have made it difficult for any profit to come. Disney has also entered the picture, with the entertainment company agreeing to pay $20 million for a license to some of Character.AI’s intellectual property.
However, this does not mean Disney has bought the entire platform. Character.AI is still looking for a buyer who is able to help keep its service running. For now, the app remains available, and the company says users can continue using it. It expects the sale process to finish around late November to early December 2026. Although, if no suitable buyer is found, the platform could eventually shut down for good. For longtime users, this news raises questions about their accounts, conversations, and favorite characters. Nothing is officially over yet, as the situation is still ongoing.
