Video games are a common way for students to spend their free time. Whether playing with friends, trying to win a match, or looking to just relax, most students have a favorite. To find out which games students at Mayfair High have been playing the most this September, I made an Instagram poll asking students to share what video game they had been playing this month. The poll received 23 responses and included a plethora of choices.

The most popular game by a landslide was Roblox, with seven students reporting playing it. According to Wired, “It's a free platform where players can dip in and out of different virtual worlds and play any game in them. It’s packed with user-created content spanning a dizzying variety of genres and titles.”

After Roblox, Tomodachi Life was the next most-popular game, with two students reporting playing it. Concrete describes Tomodachi Life as “a ‘social simulation game’. You act as caretaker of a ‘digital dollhouse’ island. People turn characters from video games, films, TV shows, books, celebrities, real-life friends and family, even pets into Miis! You name it, someone has done it.

An additional 14 video games were mentioned by students. These included first-person and tactical shooters like Valorant and Call of Duty, as well as open-world and action-adventure role-playing games such as Genshin Impact, Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Hearts, and Warframe. The poll also featured Minecraft, a sandbox and user-generated content platform, alongside sports and movement games like Madden, Rocket League, and Skate. The remaining entries were Pokémon, an augmented reality/location-based RPG, as well as Block Blast and Water Sort – both of which are mobile casual puzzle games.

Overall, the poll showed that there isn't just one game everyone at school is playing. Students have different favorite types of video games depending on their personal tastes; some enjoy competitive games, others prefer playing with friends, and others play to simply relax after school. Regardless, video games are clearly a popular way for students to spend their free time.
