As of this new year, a small number of aspiring student teachers have temporarily joined our family at Mayfair. Out of the wonderful bunch, one of them has joined Sra. Kodesh in her spanish classes in hopes of gaining some new experience and an inside taste of a live classroom.
Coming as a student teacher from CSULB, Matthew Gonzalez happens to be a former Mayfair Monsoon who graduated in 2019 and still proudly holds that title. Sr. Gonzalez has chosen Spanish as his class, one reason being primarily due to the social aspect of the subject. When it comes to a world language setting, interaction and involvement with the student is something that Gonzalez believes is healthy and good for a student who is learning and growing as a person. His drive to help students communicate and have a good experience in the classroom shows in the positive attitude he upholds with the people around him.
According to Gonzalez, something that attracted him to teaching was the comfort that he had felt in the classroom once and strives to have that comfort present on his own one day. This comfort can promote better learning and an interactive learning environment where not only do students get to interact with each other but the teacher as well. Sr. Gonzalez's plans for his future profession involve certain social activities. For example, somewhere in the plans he has for his student is a project involving the idea of approaching a food truck and ordering something in the language associated with the class. His hope for this project idea is that it will give students an opportunity to use what they have learned to have a real life interaction and get a little taste of what it might be or look like in real life.
Although work prepping is not amongst his preferred activities when it comes to teaching, he seems to embrace all qualities of teaching, whether it is hard or easy. The ability to help kids become better with their communication skills is definitely what seems to drive this wonderful person's dream and with the practice of being a student teacher, he is one more step closer.
