“If Anything Happens I Love You” is a simplistic, 12-minute animated short film that has recently gained popularity on multiple media platforms due to its unexpected plot. This Netflix original shines light on school shootings and the pain caused by losing loved ones.
The film starts off with a couple who seems to be torn about something. The film takes us through some of the unforgettable memories they have with their daughter who seems to be missing throughout the film. We then discover that their daughter was unfortunately killed during a school shooting. This film gains its title because the daughter sends her parents a text message saying “if anything happens I love you,” which ends up being her last words to them. At the end of the film the family is brought together again as they grieve and confront their feelings with each other.
This was an extremely sad film that brought tears to many peoples’ eyes, as it was such a beautiful way to represent something so heart-breaking. Although this short-film was made to bring awareness to school shootings I wish they would’ve done more. I feel as though the film could have given more resources as to where to learn about gun control, school shootings, and ways to help families that have been affected.
Regardless, this film was a truly beautiful animation of such a huge tragedy for many. If you have Netflix I would recommend you watch this astonishing film.
