One of Mayfair’s alumni of 2018, Ms. Swearingen has returned to Mayfair as she is now teaching middle school English. With her Bachelor in English from Cal State Dominguez Hills, she is ready to help students learn the beauty in reading and writing.
Q: What subject are you teaching?
A: The subjects I teach are English 7 and Success 1.
Q: Why do you enjoy the subjects that you teach?
A: I love teaching English 7 and Success 1 because seventh graders are at such an exciting stage of learning. They’re developing deeper thinking skills, learning to analyze texts, and beginning to see how language connects to the real world. It’s incredibly rewarding to guide them as they grow in confidence and build the skills that will help them succeed both in school and in life.
Q: How is the transition going from student teacher to a teacher with her own classroom?
A: The transition from student teacher to first-year teacher has been an exciting and fulfilling journey. Having my own classroom feels like a dream come true. I’m especially grateful to be teaching at Mayfair, the very school where I grew up and was inspired to become an educator. The support I’ve received here has been amazing, and I truly feel like part of a family.
Q: What do you rate the first quarter of school from 1-10 and why?
A: I would rate the first quarter of the school year a 10. I’ve loved getting to know all of my students and building connections with them. They make each day enjoyable and always find ways to make me laugh. Watching their personalities shine through their learning has been one of the best parts of my experience so far.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish by the end of the school year?
A: By the end of the school year, I hope to find a healthy balance between being a dedicated first-year teacher and maintaining my life outside of school. Teaching can be all-consuming, especially in the first year, but I’m learning how to manage my time, set boundaries, and make space for rest and personal growth.
Ms. Swearingen has been working hard to help out her students with their writing skills in hopes that they will see how useful writing gets as they advance in school and throughout the rest of their life.
