The new 2025-2026 year has started up and Mayfair Middle and High School has many new staff members with one of them being Ms. Lopez. She is a brand new middle school staff member who serves here as a counselor. I have had the privilege of getting to know and interview Ms. Lopez recently about her new position here at Mayfair.
Q: What is your educational background?
“My educational background is I have a BA in human development and a masters in counseling education with the PPS.”
Q: How long have you been practicing counseling?
“Prior to here, I was at Bellflower high school for eight years and prior to that, I had done it for another 8 years.”
Q: What are some of your main goals this school year being a middle school counselor?
“My goals for this school year is to collaborate with my colleagues Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Yepiz, and try to reach all of our middle school students and to meet with them all more than once a year. I feel like we've already met with the majority of them once, with their minute meetings. I also want to have more engagement and try to be more available for social-emotional purposes.”
Q: How are you going to support your students?
“Academically, we were just in a meeting earlier and we are planning to meet with 8th graders who are not meeting the 2.0 promotion requirement in the gym sometime next month to try to reach out to those students. Then, we are just going to be more visible by going into classrooms and calling kids up for academic advising.”
Q: What are some challenges you have experienced, if any so far?
“Some challenges are that there are not enough work hours in a day. There's so much to do in so little time because we have to do snack supervision, lunch supervision, and sport supervision. We also have to do class presentations, parent meetings, and IEP meetings. We constantly keep going and to me, there just is not enough time for everyone I would like to see.”
Q: How are you liking working with your new coworkers?
“I love it. My new coworkers are amazing. They are such wonderful women who are here to serve the kids, they love what they do, and they just have this great positive energy and we just work really well together. I am really enjoying it.”
Q: How has your experience at Mayfair been so far overall?
“It has been great. Everyone has been very kind, welcoming, everyone always greets me with a smile so it's been very warm and welcoming.”
Q: What are you looking forward to this year?
“Work wise, we have a couple conferences we are going to be going to just to see what other techniques and what other activities or educational presentations are being implemented by other schools, so I am looking forward to that conference next month. Personally, just getting a more work life balance, getting more me time. Maybe try to make it to the gym more and do yoga more to help me feel less stressed for the next day at work.”
Thank you Ms. Lopez for making time in your busy schedule, so I can do this interview with you. I feel happy for Ms. Lopez and the middle school students that get the pleasure of working with her. This leads me to believe that she will be a great addition to the school and be a positive source for her students. Stay tuned with the Windjammer for more future updates!
