Dear Margot, “I’m feeling overwhelmed with my college workload and social life. How can I find balance without sacrificing my mental health or my friendships?”

Many people, no matter what age, deal with having to balance both mental health, work, and social life all the time. Obviously, many people face life in different ways. As individuals grow, life definitely starts to take a toll on them. There are always ways to tackle these problems.

Being in college is certainly one of the hardest parts in life. Even with a boat load of work, it’s really important to get sleep or some sort of rest. You don’t have to feel guilty about having some rest once in a while, especially after so much work. I recommend trying to do a reset every week, like cleaning, exercising, or anything you truly enjoy to calm yourself down. If you notice your energy patterns, it’ll be easier to see when you feel more sharp and energized.

Workload, as you get older specifically, gets harder and tougher. There are always ways to make it easier on yourself. For example, having a certain schedule to do work will help plenty. Doing specific work on specific days can help take some weight off your shoulders. You can also try doing similar school work and projects at the same time, little by little, to save time and stress.

Friendships and relationships are very important things in life. Getting help from or talking about your problems with close friends or peers will help you greatly, and bottling your feelings and issues will not make anything better. Doing work and studying with your friends will make things less challenging and more enjoyable. If you are often with your friends, it’s best to set boundaries with them and find different ways or times to hang out with them.
