Bring Anything But a Backpack!
Mayfair kicked off Spirit Week on Monday, Sept. 14th, with unique outfits for each day. The week started off with Jersey Day, where students and staff were encouraged to represent their favorite teams and sports. On Tuesday, the theme was Adam Sandler Day; students arrived dressed in oversized, casual outfits inspired by Adam Sandler’s signature look, recreating outfits from his movies and his daily activities. The highlight of the week arrived on Wednesday, Sept. 16th, with “Bring Anything But a Backpack!” Day. Previously, Mayfair had hosted a similar theme for Spirit Week, but the theme was quickly removed for future weeks after students notoriously brought kitchen appliances, trash cans, and shopping carts to class. This time around, students for the most part were able to carry their supplies in almost any container, except carts or excessively large items.
Even with these restrictions, students didn't hold back on this challenge, finding creative substitutes for traditional school bags. Participants brought interesting items such as bike wheels, big wheels, a PlayStation 5 box, baby strollers, a Build-A-Bear box, plastic storage containers, coolers, skateboards, cereal boxes, a life-sized skeleton prop, and a toy miniature Target cart. Some of these items were quite interesting to see and made this week truly memorable. Seeing the display of creativity from our student body highlighted the light-hearted and collective participatory nature of our campus.
Looking back, the event was a success, bringing students together through humorous creativity. This week was a great opportunity to show students' creativity and come together; we can only hope that Mayfair will continue to host these events more often.
