Say hello to Mario Castro! Mr. Castro is the new teacher for middle school band and choir. He is taking over the role of Ms. Holcomb who retired last year. Here is an interview of Mr Castro about himself and his experiences so far.
Q: “How are you enjoying Mayfair so far?”
A: “Mayfair Middle School? I’m loving the culture. The school, from students all the way up to the staff, feels like a big family, like they’ve known each other forever and they’re really excited to be working together.”
Q: “What inspired you to teach band and choir?”
A: “Music was always there for me in tough times. And now that I get to pass that along, I want to be that source of strength for other students, so that inspires me everyday to come into work.”
Q: “Have you taught before?”
A: “Yes, this is my eleventh year of teaching.”
Q: “What other performances have you done with your other schools?”
A: “There are some highlights. We've done the Rose Parade multiple times. Last year, I took my group to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm, so that was fun for them. But one of the things that I was proud of was taking one of my groups to Las Vegas and having them compete and get first place.”
Q: “What types of lessons or techniques do you teach your students?”
A: “Well, there's different components that come to a good musician. The first component is that students need to be able to learn how to behave in a music class, what the expectations of a musician are, so I am teaching them those things. And then the second component is teaching them how to read music, how to do all those things. Once you have those two components together, the easy part is learning how to perform because that's the part they love.”
Q: “What advice would you give people who are on the fence about joining?”
A: “Try it.”
Q: “What are your goals working here at Mayfair?”
A: “To continue the legacy of music that this community has built with the teachers that have been here and are currently here. There's a legacy of excellence that I want to make sure I continue and that I do right by them.”
Q: “Have you always wanted to be a music teacher?”
A: “That’s deep. When I first got to college it was no. Most of the time you're told you have to go to college to get a degree that makes you tons of money. When you go into music it’s assumed you're not going to make money. But I found that two things were true for me: number one, I love giving back and I’m a person of service. Number two, I love music. Combining both of those, I saw that the teaching career path was a clear path for me because I can give back to my students while also doing the things I love the most.”
Q: “This is more of a fun one, but what’s your favorite genre or band?”
A: “I love all music, but if you were to look at my spotify playlists, it would be Red Hot Chili Peppers.”
