The L.A Bellflower Looting

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at approximately 3:30am, there was a street takeover at the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Somerset Boulevard. There were over 100 vehicles taking over the streets and hundreds of spectators. One business that was heavily affected by this event was the A-Z market. Dozens of masked looters were captured on surveillance cameras as they used an electric saw to break through the shop's locks. The looters caused the family-owned business approximately $30,000 in damages and stolen goods. This event is still under investigation by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

This event affects our community because it can drive away small businesses, which are the drivers of local economic growth. According to CBS News, one of the owners of the store, Steven Abdoulaff, said, "Within 10 minutes, all your hard work is going off; it breaks my heart. We've built it with the whole family. My mom, dad, brother, sister; we've built it with love." This shows how harmful these types of events can be for business owners. In many cases, owners cannot easily fix something that took them years of hard work to build. 

This event also shows how crime is escalating in our communities. According to an article by KTLA 5, the owners say they have been robbed before, but it was never something as big as this. In this article, it is also mentioned that “illegal street takeovers are not harmless” they bring other types of criminal activity which affects our communities and the wellness of all the people in them. This means that our community can become more unsafe not just for businesses like the A-Z market, but also for us, the students, the workers, families, and all individuals that live here.

In conclusion, this event has left a lasting impression on our community, highlighting how the escalation of crime directly affecting our community. It shows the devastating impact that the reckless actions of others can have on a hardworking family. Although the looters have not been identified and no arrests have been made, the family is already looking for ways to move forward. They have started a GoFundMe page where they kindly ask: “We are asking for your support to help us repair the damage, replace the stolen merchandise, and get our business back on its feet. Any donation, no matter how small, means so much to our family.”
