In recent events, an email was sent out by Mayfair High School regarding recent school threats that targeted multiple schools such as Modesto High (MHS), Lincoln High (LHS) and Calla High. The threat wasn’t originally intended for Mayfair to be involved; however, the confusion led to rumors being spread and rising panic among students. The threat was made on Instagram quoting, “It’s up tomorrow for MHS, LHS, Calla High, and Modesto schools too. I will be shooting up the school on 9/16/24. I want all kids to go to school. Good luck.”
After the following weekend, a Modesto High School student was arrested while the threats were discovered to be a part of a statewide hoax. Even though the threat was not related to Mayfair High School, the staff and district still alerted families about the presence of the threat. Since then, there have been other various threats such as threatening to pull the fire alarm or vandalize the school, both being serious crimes. Principal Diaz made an announcement on both the 18th and 19th of September pertaining to the threats on social media by expressing concerns about the safety of students and staff. Cautioning students to not spread any kind of threat, whether it is true or not. He emphasized to report any suspicious actions or activities to staff in order for them to handle the decision of what to do about it.
In all seriousness, it is not funny to threaten or make jokes about threatening schools. This could lead to serious consequences and even serving time in jail. Similar to vandalizing, pulling the fire alarm and spreading dangerous threats to cause fear, it causes unnecessary panic for students, parents, and staff. School is supposed to be a safe learning environment, where students only have to worry about their grades. Students shouldn’t have to worry about surviving a shooter attack. It's obnoxious and terrifying how society desensitized to these threats because of how often they happen; similar to how the fire alarm kept getting set off last year even though there was no fire. Overall, this topic is serious and it’s ridiculous that it could put others in danger all over a joke.
