Remembering Peter Cullen

On August 26, 2026, famous voice actor Peter Cullen sadly passed away at 85 years old from cardiac arrest. As a voice actor, Peter Cullen was known for his stellar work, voicing characters like Optimus Prime from “Transformers” and Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh.”
From 1984 to 1987, Peter Cullen voiced his most popular character, the ultimate Autobot leader known as Optimus Prime. He first voiced Optimus in the animated television series, “The Transformers,” then later returned for the live-action movie “Transformers” in 2007. Through his skill, Cullen gave the Autobot leader a strong sense of dignity, faithful restraint, and great compassion.
While Cullen was preparing for his audition to voice Optimus Prime, his brother Larry Cullen, a retired US Marine Corps Captain, advised him to focus on portraying a mentally-strong character rather than a stereotypical shouter. As Larry put it, “Be a hero, not a Hollywood hero.” Peter Cullen would then draw inspiration for Optimus Prime’s voice and personality from his brother, who reflected positive leadership qualities.
Cullen's family issued a statement asking fans to “honor his [Peter’s] legacy by serving their communities and leading with compassion, integrity, and loyalty.” In their statement, the Cullen family also included the famous saying, “be strong enough to be gentle,” which is directly associated with Optimus Prime himself. This phrase was said to be deeply personal to Optimus Prime’s origin story and to Peter Cullen.
Cullen’s voice acting was recognized in 2023 by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences; the academy honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable voice-acting range. Alongside this achievement, “Transformers” returned to cinemas as part of a 40th-anniversary mock series called "The Apology Tour” for "traumatizing the younger generation.”
Peter Cullen will always be remembered for the characters he brought to life and the memories he has brought to all of our childhoods. His films and series will forever be played for many generations to come. May he rest in peace.
