After 16 years in the 200 wing, well-known English teacher Mrs. Berryman has announced she will relocate to the 400 wing to join AVID, a new elective program. I interviewed her to discuss the transition and her thoughts on the program.

Q: What is AVID, and is it the reason for your relocation?

A: Yes, AVID is the reason, and it is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is an elective for those who want to be college-bound. I was asked if I wanted to be part of it, and I agreed to it.

Q: Is there anything you look forward to regarding this change or being part of AVID?

A: The new curriculum I will be able to teach; I also look forward to being able to help the students who want to be college-bound and ready. I also look forward to the field trips we plan on taking to many colleges.

Q: Will AVID be the main subject you teach, or will you remain an English and ELD teacher?

A: English and ELD are the two main subjects I'm still teaching for the time being; however, I'm not sure if AVID will replace the two and make me teach it full time.

Q: Do you know when you will start moving to your new classroom?

A: Relocating has already begun, as I'm already starting to set my things there.

Q: What impact do you plan to bring to students who join AVID?

A: The impact I want to bring for students is to be college and career ready, to help them have the resources ready for their future!

Q: Will you miss your current classroom location and the teachers in this area?

A: Yeah, since most of the English department is here, it was nice to have most of them close by, and I have been here for 16 years, so it will be quite a change for me.

Q: Is there anything you are worried or concerned about?

A: Getting things set up for the most part, reorganizing, and reconfiguring seats.

Thank you, Mrs. Berryman, for the opportunity to interview and address the questions people may have about this transition. We wish you the best in this new chapter of your teaching career and hope you succeed in everything you have planned!
