The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards happened on September 27, and honestly, there was a lot going on. Madonna was easily one of the biggest parts of the night, walking off stage with seven awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Dance, and Best Album. Taylor Swift also had a huge night, winning Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and the first-ever Artist-Director Honors.

Other winners included BTS for Song of the Year and Best K-pop, Sienna Spiro for Best New Artist, Bad Bunny for Best Latin, LISA for Best Pop, and Olivia Rodrigo who won Best Alternative for “the cure.”

Going back to Madonna - this is where things got a little funny. PinkPantheress’ hilarious reaction to Madonna’s acceptance speech, and Charli XCX also being caught up in the chaos. Charli presented Madonna with an award, just for Madonna to have to be reminded of what category she had just won. Charli even had to help her figure it out which was funny to witness.

Then there was the collaboration between Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter. “Bring Your Love” won Best Collaboration, but it was very unexpected that Madonna and Sabrina were collaborating in that way. When I saw that they had won, a part of me wondered: was this rigged? It’s just my opinion, but I was definitely confused. I had never heard their song on the radio before, and certainly not at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This award going to them when there were more well-known options had me surprised.

The night also included a George Michael tribute featuring RAYE, Sombr, Adam Lambert, and Teddy Swims. One last thought to ask to conclude: what are your thoughts on Sombr performing for the George Michael tribute? Personally, I’m not his biggest fan so this collaboration wasn’t too exciting for me. Overall, the MTV Video Music Awards was fun to watch and I am looking forward to seeing where the award-winning artists go from here, especially Madonna!
