Halloween is upon us. The Spirit Halloween’s are open, people are assembling their costumes and arranging their plans for Halloween. With Halloween comes scary movies, movies that put you on the edge of your seat in anticipation for a scare. They have been a staple of Halloween for many years, with countless genres and movies coming from it. Some genres include slasher, possession, comedic, gore, psychological, paranormal, monster, splatter, and thriller to name a few.
I went around and asked 21 different people from Mayfair Middle and High school and recorded their thoughts on horror movies: Do they like horror movies? What’s their favorite genre and movie? Out of these 21 people, nine people said they don’t like horror movies, nine others said they do, and three people were indifferent.
In terms of genres, psychological horror was a common vote, with five people saying it was their favorite. In second place was the slasher genre with two people claiming this genre is their favorite. Other favorite genres include thriller, paranormal, comedy, and existential dread, each having one person say that was their favorite category.
Student's favorite movie had a much larger variety. The two most popular were "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Conjuring" series with two votes each. Smile, Terrifier, Babadook, Saw, Scream, Skinamarink, and VHS ‘94 each had one vote.
Horror isn’t for everyone, which is completely understandable. You don’t need horror movies to have a fun Halloween. It doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy what it brings. Horror movies have led to numerous costumes and decorations, adding to the magic of Halloween. I hope everyone has a thrilling Halloween this year!
