Harry Potter Reboot on HBO Announcement

On April 12, 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery announced the TV reboot of Harry Potter, during a Max streaming presentation. The release date for season 1 (which will be titled after the first book and movie: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) will be on Christmas Day 2026. The trailer for the upcoming first season of the reboot: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was released on September 2nd. 

Season 2 has started production in mid-2026, with no release date out yet, and cast additions had begun for season 2 as followed: Kit Harington (Gilderoy Lockhart) Lenny Rush (Dobby), Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle (later known as the Dark Lord), Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley (replacing Gracie Cochrane),  Rafe Spall (Arthur Weasley), Molly Hewitts-Richards (Moaning Myrtle), and Jasper Ambrose (Colin Creevey). 

Dominic McLaughlin is starring as Harry Potter (originally played by Daniel Radcliffe), the main character who is raised by his abusive family after his parents died when he was just a baby, leaving him with the scar of the lighting bolt. He enrolls as a first year student at Hogwarts where he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger

Alastair Stout will play as Ron Weasley (replacing Rupert Grint) and Arabella Stanon who previously played as Matilda in the musical rendition will play as Hermione Granger (replacing Emma Watson). 

John Lithgow will play as Albus Dumbledore (replacing Michael Gambon and Richard Harris), the Headmaster of Hogwarts, a powerful wizard, senior professor and Harry’s early mentor figure. Paapa Essiedu will play as Severus Snape (originally played by Alan Rickman), who is potions professor, head of the house Slytherin, and adversary of Harry and his friends the first few books. Janet McTeer is playing as Headmistress Minerva McGonagall (originally played by Maggie Smith), known to be the head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts, she also is a transfiguration professor and early ally of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Nick Frost is playing as Rubeus Hagrid (replacing Robbie Coltrane), the Hogwarts gamekeeper who also watches over everything from dragons to hippogriffs, and was the first person to inform Harry when he was young that he’s a wizard. Lox Pratt will star as Draco Malfoy (originally played by Tom Felton) , who is Harry’s enemy and student of the Slytherin House.

Amos Kitson will play as Dudley Dursley (originally played by Harry Melling) the only child of the Dursley family who terrorizes Harry and is spoiled by his parents. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby are cast as Petunia Dursley nee Evans and Vernon Dursley (originally played as Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw). They play as Harry’s uncle and aunt who are abusive towards Harry because of his magical abilities and Petunias strained relationship with her sister Lily.
