Fall of a Legend: Maggie Smith

As of September on Saturday 27th, Maggie Smith, one of the most talented, award winning actresses has passed away at age of 89. According to the New York Times, from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, her family reported her death in a statement by a publicist, the cause of death not stated. This news is heartbreaking for her fans across the world who have watched her from the beginning of her wonderfully fulfilled roles as an actress and left people to remember her great work and accomplishments.

From Downtown Abbey to Harry Potter, her works started from the young age around 17 studying acting at the Oxford Playhouse School. According to Britannica, she began to appear in revues in Oxford around 1952 and then in London in 1955. Soon enough she began to make a more consistent appearance at the Old Vic Theater in London where she continued to participate in a variety of plays. The flurry of roles and work that she continued to involve herself in ultimately brought her to her screen debut in 1958 in Nowhere to Go and led to the beginning of her international fame when she played her title in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. This role of hers earned her an Academy Award deeming her as best actress.

Smith was not only just a brilliant actor but she seemed to personally have been quite a beloved person to many that had the opportunity to work alongside her. As stated by BBC, Daniel Radcliffe, the actor for the infamous Harry Potter, mentioned a few things on Smith after the acknowledgment of her death. “She was a fierce intellect, had a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny.” As fans recover from the grief of another fallen legend, we send regards to the family and those who were close for their loss.
