“Dear Margot, I wanna audition for the footloose musical but idk how to convince my parents to let me due to how long it takes during practice days cause my friend said it can take up to 11 pm, how can I convince them???”

Dear reader, auditioning for the musical sounds fun, and I think it would be a great opportunity. If you are trying to convince your parents to let you participate, I think you should start by showing them that you have a plan to balance your responsibilities while also being committed to being in the musical. You should take time to talk to your parents and explain to them how you will manage your homework, studying, sleep, and how your academics work. Make sure to explain that homework still remains a priority and your grades will be in good standing throughout the semester.

Your parents might naturally be worried because you will be getting home very late  from rehearsals and that you won't have the time you need to do your homework or study. To  help convince them, you need to explain to them that you are completely aware of the timing schedule and that you will factor it into your routine in order to have enough time for school.  Similarly, your parents also might be concerned that because you're getting home so late that you might not have time or energy for your daily chores.  You need to make sure that you're aware of this and that you will remain on top of your household chores and intentionally make time no matter how busy rehearsal gets. This will show your parents accountability which will only build their trust over time.

It is important to remind your parents that the rehearsal schedule is only for a portion of the school year and that it'll be over before they know it. It is also beneficial to remind your parents that this will get you more involved in the school community and extracurricular activities that will teach you important skills such as teamwork and time management. If acting, singing, or performing is truly a deep passion of yours, you should try to have a meaningful conversation with your parents that you really want to take this opportunity because it will bring you joy and personal growth.

Ultimately, auditioning for the musical would be a great opportunity for you to grow and discover new talents; you might even get new friendships out of it. Make sure to present your parents with a plan that helps you balance your academic goals, household chores, and the rehearsal schedule. You need to show them that you are ready for this responsibility and if you initiate a conversation with them while being honest and showing that you are willing to compromise with them, they are much more likely to support you. I hope you choose to audition and that your parents will support your dreams.
