Cross Country Finals!

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Mayfair’s Cross Country team is nearing the end of their season, which seems to be longer than most of the other fall sports here on campus. Especially since the team began practice in early June. The team just participated in the League Finals on the 2nd and in doing so are now moving on to the CIF Cross Country Prelims held at Mount San Antonio college next week. Which is why their season feels a bit long as other teams on campus are already on their first or more rounds of CIF. However, Cross Country is a bit late but are still moving on to CIF prelims next week, the girls and guys Varsity runners will be competing and will see if they will be able to move on to Finals the following week.

The team qualified to compete in Prelims after both Varsity teams placed second in the Suburban League Conference race on Thursday. Which was a tough battle as the day included hot temperature and some of the team was fighting injuries, but regardless, the Soon’s gave it their all to try to win League Champs. Even though their dream didn’t come true, senior Cristal Martinez’s did. The senior was able to place 1st in the league and is the individual suburban league champion with a time of 21: 30 on the Ralph B. Clark course. Along with that massive achievement the boys varsity team also achieved something as they had 4 out of their 7 runners placed in the top 10.

Overall, the team and school should be happy with its members as they have put in so much effort and work throughout the season. The team has practiced every day whether the temperature was over 95 or not. And have had various Saturday practices throughout the season which added on to them running at least 20 miles per week. But also thanks to all this the team was able to collect a couple medals at every invitational they went too.

As well as celebrating all the season's combination of achievements in the last race of the season, for the people on the team who are moving on, the team also celebrated the class of 2024 seniors. Which were 12 of them, 8 girls and 4 boys: Reeve Davis, Carlos Moreira, Mina Roufael, Ivan Tadeo, Cristal Martinez, Stella Lynch, Maritza Sanchez, Lizette Najera, Sarahi Quiahua, Evanelly Najar, Madison Roman, and Natalia Delagado.
