Faculty Thank-You's

As the class of 2024 begins their countdown for their final days here at Mayfair, they can't forget the people that helped impact their academic lives. Thank you staff -- not just one the ones mentioned -- but all of you for your hard work and dedication you put into your job here. Now, to hear from some of our seniors!

“Mr. Bacani was my first English teacher that made me like going to English class and I can have full conversations with. I have the most respect towards him.”

- Elizabeth Limones

“Mr. Bacani is special to me because he doesn’t feel like a teacher, he feels like a friend. He would always mess with me and I wouldn't take it seriously and I would do the same to him, and he's just really funny to talk to. I honestly wished I had him for my senior year.”

- Mark Geczi

“Mrs. Balogh is a great teacher to start my middle school and high school experience.”

- Sebastian Gonzalez

“I actually never had Ms. Barberie as a teacher but I met her back in sophomore year and she was so welcoming. She was the former volleyball coach and kept her door open for volleyball players and other athletes. Since it was my first year playing, she would talk through plays, serving, and other volleyball skills I was struggling with. I would leave my backpack in her room and almost every day, I would warm up my lunch in her microwave. Ms. Barberies always has her door open for all students and has made my student-athlete life so much easier. Thank you so much Ms. Barberie.

- Chisom Okoye

“Mrs. Beatris has helped me out so much and she makes me feel better understood. She likes my interest and sees me as a person. She helps me realize who I am as a person and always believes I can have a good future. I appreciate her help greatly and I'm glad for all the help she has given me. She is a special person to me and I appreciate her greatly.

- Sophia Campos

“Coach Bedell, Coach Powell, Melton, Mr. Suttle, Mr. Yanes, Mr. Rodriguez, Mrs. VanderBaan, Ms. Mazerie, Ms. Cole-Edwards, Ms. Hernandez, Mr Harriston, Mrs. Head, Ms. ElHessen: All these people are special because they have been with me through a lot, helped me a lot and have always been there.”

- Gerald Myles III

“Mrs. Bookout puts a lot of time and effort into what she does and she's obviously very passionate about it unlike other teachers at this school who are obviously sick of it. She's very encouraging and talented so when she teaches it's really cool. I'm not in the Color Guard anymore but she's still very nice to me and I really feel comfortable around her but like not too comfortable like, I still respect her a LOT. She does a lot for her teams that goes unappreciated or unseen and she also does her best to make her teams the best versions of themselves.”

- Sophia Renteria

“Mrs. Bookout always believes in her students and always gives everyone a chance to succeed.”

- Perla Magana

“What makes Boppell special is that when I needed help financially with school events/sports he would help me out and be there to always talk to me when I needed support. Mrs. Walker has always been kind during my high school years and would always let me talk to her about personal things.”

- Natalia Delgado

"Mrs. Breig helps me when I need help with my school work and she is really nice.”

- Zowie Gomez

“Ms. Brown in ceramics is so special because she is caring and shows love to each student. If she notices a student struggling in her class, another class, or just in life, she asks them how they are and if they need help. For example, when a student of hers was transferring to Somerset and was upset, she helped him with the transition and with feeling better about it.”

- Tristan Taylor

“Ms. Brown is my favorite because she always makes me laugh.”

- Emma Price

“Ms. Burner made the first year of high school special and fun despite the challenges that we faced during the pandemic and at home. Going back in person felt a bit weird and a bit nerve-racking, but going to her class was always calming which is ironic since it's a math class. I made friends in that class, my brother has had a class with her, as well as other friends. She always pushed me to be the best and do the best even when I didn't feel like doing or being it.”

- Valerie Reyes

“Mrs. Campbell always brought positive energy to the class, and went out of her way to get to know her students.”

- Emerson Keels

“I love Ms. Chavez as a person and as an important figure in my life. She has always been there for me and she drove me to do my all-time best in PE where I got a medal for one of the fastest mega lap times of that year in our class. She's always done her best to support her students and she still remembers me to this day and hugs me as well as being happy to see me. She’s my role model in a special way.”

- Audreanna Peters

"Ms. Chick is an amazing and patient math teacher. My strongest subject was never math, but she never made me feel down for not being the best in class. She also made me want to actively participate, and attend class each day. Not only is she an amazing math teacher, but also a genuinely amazing person. I remember she'd take care of the stray cats when her class was down in the bungalows, and she would also sacrifice her free time to help her students in need. I think she deserves more recognition, and she earned the title of my favorite teacher."

- Mariana Gonzalez

“I've had Ms. Colln for two years of the four years of my high school career and she always made the class a chill and safe environment. Sometimes I would walk into class not wanting to do anything, but she always managed to keep me on track and encouraged us to be better people and the best versions of ourselves. Thank you Ms. Colln because you let us have a good work environment and for caring for all of us. P.S. You are my favorite AP teacher.

- Valerie Reyes

“Ms. ColIn and Ms. Cole-Edward are just very sweet and nice teachers to be around. If you were to have a bad day, you can just go up to them to talk to and they really help their students step by step. They are very caring teachers and very silly too!”

- Naomi Lopez

“Ms. Colln is so special because we always end up laughing together and talking about things in class together.”

- Brylee Kluck

“Ms. Contreas, Ms. Yepiz, Ms. Jennifer, and Mrs. Walker are all really hard working and have been there for me more times than I could count. I think they do a really good job helping people and inspiring them to progress and reach their goals.”

- Jeremiah Costello

“Mr. Cross runs the Windjammer, which is a huge help to the school community. He is always approachable and will help you anytime he can. Don't even get me started with all his costumes and his corny humor. Overall, Mr. Cross is an amazing teacher and has helped me through my years in high school ever since I've known him.”

- John Ruiz

“I've had Mr. Cross for three years out of the four years of my high school career. He made his classroom a safe space and made everyone feel welcome. I'll be honest, at first I was a bit surprised about him considering how young he was, and the fact he dressed all fancy just to make himself look older since he didn't have tenure yet. But despite the classwork and homework, everyone in that class would talk. Whether it was English or Journalism, everything else didn't matter.

- Valerie Reyes

“Mr. Cross, Mr. Green, Mr. Headley, Mr. Bacani, Ms. Pinkwasser: You five have been the most important teachers in my development as an individual. Picture me a plant. I came to you, Mr. Cross, a dying plant, and you reminded this plant that it was just a flower. Mr. Green, you encouraged this flower to sing its song through the six-stringed fungus in its roots. Mr. Bacani, you helped this flower understand that it must know its audience. Mr. Headley, you taught this flower that its petals would one day be blue. Ms. Pinkwasser, you provide to this day the fertilizer that will ensure this flower’s petals stay blue but shall control the extremity of its petals’ hue. I hope I am understood.”

- Julian Guerrero

“Mr. Cross, Mr. Rodriguez, and Ms. Gaylord are some of the best English teachers I have ever had in my life, they are definitely in my top 5, they made English interesting and fun.

- Jared Dublan

“When I had Mrs. Ellis for English, she would always help me with things that I did not understand and would help me stay on task to complete my work.”

- Alexis Vargas Lopez

“Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. VanderBaan are my two favorite teachers. They are the nicest teachers I've ever had and they are both really helpful and understanding people. I wish I had them all in high school for English. Ms. Viska has been my favorite math teacher I've ever had. And the way she would teach math was really simple to follow and she was just a cool teacher in general.”

- Ivan Tadeo

“Madame Fauben has tolerated our class, was always friendly, and made learning French fun and easy. We were in class but it didn't feel like it thanks to the safe learning environment she created. It was because of her that I was able to get out of my comfort zone and feel confident in speaking French to French people and listening to songs in French.”

- Valerie Reyes

“Madame Fauben has been a prime example of teaching students in engaging ways that can make a difference in their lives. I've been in her class for all of my high school career and it makes me happy to have been with her that long! I hope whatever happens in her life is great and full of wonders!”

- Jaiyah Harrison

He has been the best mentor, teacher, coach, and everything else for the past 6 years. You will always be a part of my life and my success; you're the best Fong!”

I enjoy going to Mr. Geddy's class and seeing what new things he has planned for us. I also enjoy walking into his class on Fridays and hearing the Friday song he puts on for us.”

- Emily Arceo

“My favorite teachers include Mr. Geddy – always with his mic , Mrs. VanderBaan who was very sweet and the class was easy to pass, and Mr. McCabe and all his jokes (that were actually funny).”

- Daniel Franco

“Mr. Irving is a great teacher and cares about his students.”

- Angel Vallejo

- Aniyah Mingo

“Mike and Mrs. Tony are my favorites because I've known them for almost 3 years ever since I've been at this school.”

“Mr. Nelson is very kind and easy to talk to. He isn’t like a teacher who just teaches and after they’re done talking they just sit in the back of the class while kids do assignments. Mr. Nelson is very interactive and tuned into conversations. He makes jokes and never disappoints at putting smiles on peoples faces.”

- Janelle Clark

“Mr. Nelson is a great person and a great teacher. He allows us to express ourselves through our art. As the Art Academy teacher, he has a lot on his plate but he still lets us choose what we want to do with our art. He doesn’t put us in a box but lets us break the box of expectations of what high school students should be drawing. Instead, he lets us just enjoy what we do and helps us when we need it, such as when we’re struggling with a certain art medium. This is why Mr. Nelson is a great teacher: he lets us be ourselves.”

- Arlette Najera

“I have a lot of love and respect for Mr. Nyguen. I only had his class for a couple of weeks because I dropped it, but in my short time being in that class, I developed such a high respect for him. He respects all of his students and is one of the most understanding and empathetic teachers I have ever seen. He takes his student's opinions seriously and treats us all like equals. He even let us have a say in some of the work we did. But on top of all the great teaching, he is just such a great person as well. He has come to almost –  if not all – home games for almost every sport. He supports his students and has a high school spirit. I am always so surprised and grateful to see him in the stands at these events. He has been at almost all of our volleyball home games as well and never fails to support his students. From the day I met her, I knew she would be placing me in the right classes and making sure I received the best education possible in order for me to graduate. If I were to give one teacher a shout-out, it would be Mrs. VanderBann. I met Mrs. VanderBann at my IEP meeting. She has done a wonderful job preparing all students for our next chapter in life, adulthood. She makes sure we all know what to do after high school. She is always making learning fun in the best way possible. She is always making sure we are prepared for graduation. I am proud of Mrs. VanderBann, not just as my teacher, but as my case manager.”

I am a first-generation student who doesn't have older siblings to help me with the college application process or financial aid and I know I'm not the only one which is why I am very thankful for Ms. Saucedo who helps students like me figure these things out. I understand that it is her job, but it is the way that she goes about helping that makes her really special. She is very kind and patient towards the students who ask her for help. Overall, Ms. Saucedo is a great person who has shown me kindness, patience, and more and has helped me tremendously in figuring out the right steps for the future that awaits me.
