TikTok Trends: Reverse Glass Painting

Materials:

  • Acrylic paint

  • Paint pen or sharpie

  • Paint brushes

  • Picture frame with removable glass

  • Printed picture of what you will be painting

  • Acrylic Paint

The first thing you want to do is remove the glass pane from your picture frame. I recommend getting your picture frames from the dollar store because it’s much cheaper, and it's better to not spend a lot of money just in case you mess up. The next thing you want to do is tape the paper that has your image on it to the glass pane. Center your image on the glass the way you want it to look before you tape it. The next thing to do is trace your image onto the glass with sharpie or paint pens. The sharpie is slightly sheer, but if you use paint pens, they dry fast and might chip off while you are painting. Once your image is traced onto the glass, you can remove the paper, or you can leave it on as a color guide. The paint you want to use is acrylic paint because it dries fast, and you won’t have to worry about it wiping off of the glass. The next thing you want to take into consideration while painting is you have to paint backwards. By this I mean, you have to paint all the details and highlights and shading first, then paint the big portions last. Also, you don't want to paint in strokes, you want to glob the paint on so it will be opaque on the other side when you flip it over. Once you are done painting, flip the glass over, and then you have your painting!

In conclusion, this painting trend turned out to be a lot harder than I anticipated it to be. The painting itself took a really long time because you have to glob the paint on and make sure you don’t go outside of the lines. You also use a lot of paint, and when I ran out of the color I mixed, I had to remix a new batch, which took a while. The drying process was overall fast because it is acrylic paint. Something I recommend is at the end using a sewing needle to scrape off all of the paint that went outside of the lines. Also, sharpie comes off when you paint over it; I'm not sure what other you could use to trace because paint pens come off as well. I wish the finished product of mine was better, but I’m no artist so I figured it wasn’t going to be good anyways. But if you’re bored, you like art, and are looking for something to try, it wouldn’t hurt giving this a try.
